ALPS OutdoorZ Commander Freighter External Frame Plus backpack
You can hardly find an outdoor bag that can get you two things for the price of one: a Pack Bag and a Freighter Frame. That, and a whole world of other features that will get you through your every outdoor adventure. That is because the ALPS OutdoorZ has a Pack Bag that can put all your necessary tools, gear and other items and carry it with ease to your base camp.
It has enough compartments and features to make it all in one trip without having to leave anything – front pocket, spotting scope pocket, hinged pockets on either side of the bag plus a rifle holder to go with the already spacious main compartment. There are also pockets intended for your knife and flash light plus straps to safely tuck in your shooting stix. To access the bag’s Freighter Frame, you just need to unload your external frame backpack and detach it to release the Frame. Yu can use it to securely transport your meat using the built in lashing system. The shoulder straps and waist belts are well-padded so you wouldn’t have to worry about extra support and protection at whatever weight you need to carry.

This 65 liter top load pack weighs in only at 5.5 pounds but it has perhaps more features of packs twice its size – cool mesh back panels, contoured straps, front panel for loading the sleeping bag, compressions and sternum straps, hydration reservoir and pocket – lots of pockets conveniently situated to promote easy access. What more can you ask for?
Kelty Trekker External Frame Pack
When the Kelty Company came to be half a century ago, the goal of its creator, Dick Kelty was to come up with an ultra-solid pack that can withstand whatever condition and comes with multiple pockets to stash all the necessary gear. And this was the exact same principle used in creating this new Kelty staple.
It has a large front pocket and several zippered side pockets with room to stash in a regular sized sleeping bag. It also has water bottle pockets and is hydration compatible complete with reservoir sleeve. There are daisy chains, lash tabs, an axe loop and a key fob for safety tucking of gears. The bag is made of 420-denier polyster Ball Shadow body fabric plus 420-denier polyester Oxford reinforcement fabric.
If you’re fairly new to this outdoor hobby, this is a good startup external frame pack for you. It has a lot of features perfect for short different overnight activities. It has a total of 3,750 cubic inches of space from the top loading main compartment plus the pockets from the bottom and the top plus the easy-access pockets on either side of the bag. It’s also pretty packed with features to hold your hydration necessities with an internal pouch that can fit a 2-Liter water bladder (sold separately) and two side pouches that can hold 0.5-L of water bottle apiece. Lashing tabs can also accommodate rolled up stuff (tents, sleeping bags, coats, etc).
The shoulder straps and hip belts are just as comfortable as they are stable too, promoting even distribution of your load while helping you keep your balance even in very steep tracks. Plus the mesh suspension back system of this external frame backpack promotes proper airflow in your back keeping you cool and dry and comfortable no matter how long your hike may take. It also comes with several compression straps to keep everything compact and neatly tucked on the back and inside the bag.
